Following a sexual assault we complete a holistic examination (with consent) to ensure our patients wellbeing. This consists of us obtaining information about the assault, asking questions regarding medical history, mental health, sexual health, developmental and behavioural history. Following this we will complete a top to toe examination. In the room will be the doctor or nurse and a crisis worker. We use a special camera that enables us to take pictures, and we sometimes take swabs for evidence purposes. After we have finished with this we will offer medications, if appropriate, and referrals to other agencies that can provide counselling, emotional support and guidance through the criminal justice system, sexual health screening, mental health facilities and many more. Our nurses will follow up with our patients after roughly three weeks to make sure that these support services have been in contact and make sure there is nothing further that is required.
