BCWA’s Children’s Independent Sexual Violence Advocate (CHISVA) service supports children and young people aged 5-18 who have experienced rape, sexual violence or sexual abuse. Specially trained staff offer trauma-informed support to help children cope with what has happened, reduce the distress of engaging with the criminal justice system, and build recovery for the longer-term. They work one-to-one with children and young people, with support appointments available in safe spaces, either in their school, BCWA headquarters, or remotely via video call and telephone.

Referral pathways include schools, MARAC, MASH, social services, PSARC, Police, GPs. Referral criteria is that an incidence of sexual violence has to have been confirmed. Regarding the support of victims of sexual violence, for us to be a trauma-informed service we require a confirmation that an incidence of sexual violence has occurred. This can be via the child's disclosure or through supporting evidence from agencies who work with the child. We are a consent-led service.
