1-1 mentoring sessions for young black males who are referred to us who are convicted, involved in, or at risk of criminal activity.

Sessions delivered will be 1 or 2 hour sessions based on the needs of the young person and the type of delivery. The support they receive will be assessed holistically, some young people may need to be mentored through physical activity such as football or a game, whereas another prefers to talk or write, based on their individual learning styles. We would accommodate this within their mentoring sessions which would include building trusting relationships, creating a safe environment for the young person to discuss and reflect on their current situation, set goals/targets and review their progress.

There is support available for small group sessions which would be a different approach as it would be more collaborative, encouraging the young people to hold each other to account, learn from each other, and comradery between peers. It allows the young men to share their experiences and gain confidence that they are not alone.

Both 1-1 and group sessions are based on building stronger mindsets while incorporating Afro-Caribbean culture. Our ethos is to provide a safe environment for positive reflection allowing the young people to reflect on their negative choice(s), experiences and issues and turn them into positive life lessons. We have a trauma-informed approach and use this in conjunction with the culturally appropriate approach.
